Marine nature in East Helsinki

Tammisalo is so large that you wouldn't think it was an island when you look at it from land. On its northern side, Tammisalo is separated from the mainland by a narrow channel, and on its southern side by the slightly wider Jatasalmi, Porolahti and Tilliruukinlahti. On the eastern side, the larger Strömsinlahti and Marjaniemi beach open up.

The canals make the Tammisalo tour fascinating. Remember to watch out for other boaters in the narrow channel. The total distance is 10 kilometres, and the route is easy in terms of difficulty.

The trip starts from Kivinoka southwards towards Naurissalmi, under which you will reach the Tullisaarenselkä, between Herttoniemi and Kulosaari. From here, turn east towards Herttoniemenranta and you will soon reach Tilliruukinlahti - Tammisalo is already looming directly ahead. You pass through Jatasalmi via the Laajasalo canal, and Tammisalo is on your left all the time. East of Tammisalo in Strömsinlahti, you paddle towards the marina, before turning west into Tammisalo Channel. The canal widens slightly as you reach Porolahti, and the return to Kivinokka follows the same route.

On this route you stay close to the shore at all times, so the sea is mostly calm. Be prepared to wait for your turn in the Tammisalo canal and give way to boaters if necessary.
